So here we are, day 3. So far, so good. I will admit that my legs are generally always in some level of discomfort now, but definitely not pain. I know it will only get harder as I go, but so far it’s looking good for me to do a half-marathon in August.

Yesterday’s run was interval training. This is what I will be doing every Wednesday for the foreseeable future. I started off with a 5×400 set of intervals. This will increase by one interval every week. The plan says to run this at 5k speed. I am hoping to be in the 8 min/mile range for a 5k race, so I ran each interval between 7-8 minutes/mile. 400m is close to 1/4 mile, so I walk/jogged a 1/4 mile, and ran a 1/4 mile at pace. I did that 5 times.

Overall, it felt good. just when my heart rate would start getting up there (165-ish BPM) it would be time to slow down. The whole run came in under 3 miles, so all in all, a good Wednesday run. Luckily, I got home just as it started to pour rain, so luckily, I stayed mostly dry.

Today will be kind of a tough day. Thursdays I run 3 miles at any pace, as long as I get the 3 miles in, but unlike Tuesdays, I have to do weights today too. I’ll be doing kettle bell again.

Looking forward to finishing my first week of training on Sunday, which coincidentally, I will be running a 5 mile race in North Park.

And now for something completely different: CAPTCHArt

Well, I made it to day 2 of training. Yesterday’s training was a relaxing 3 mile run.
Well, I made it to day 2 of training. Yesterday’s training was a relaxing 3 mile run. I wasn’t supposed to care about my pace, but just run the distance in whatever time I ended up doing it in. I still wore my heart rate monitor and pacing chip, just to see how I was doing.

Surprisingly, I kept a fairly steady 10:20 min/mile pace without even caring about it. That’s only about 20 secs off from where I do a 5k. This run felt better than most, too. I ran for more of it, and only walked 3 times, each fro about 20 seconds. Overall, a good run.

As for weather, it was a beautiful day, high 70′s, and very sunny. Pretty much perfect running weather.

Today’s run is 5×400 meter interval training, with some walking/light jogging mixed in. I don’t really feel too awesome today, so I am hoping for that to subside by the end of the day.

I am doing a training program from Hal Higdon to get me ready to run a half marathon by August. It’s a 12 week program that has about 5 days of running per week. Since I can do a 10k fairly easily, I don’t see this program being too hard to complete. I will (hopefully) post the results of each day here. So, here we go with day 1:

Yesterday was the first day of my half-marathon training. Mondays are my weights and stretching days, so I did my standard kettle bell training routine. I did 1.5 of the 3 circuits. Since it has been so long since I did weights, I am happy with the amount I did.

So, it looks like I’m in the final week before the Pittsburgh Marathon relay race. I will be running the third leg of the race, a total of 6.4 miles through Southside, up to Oakland, and finish up in Shadyside. Sure seems like more than 6.4 miles to me.

I am pretty pumped for this, as I’ve run a few 5k races before, but nothing this long, and nothing with this many people. Should be a pretty amazing experience.

So, time to recover from Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week, cut beer out till after the race, and get into health mode for a few days.
